I have a wide experience of education from Primary to University levels both in Britain and Germany.

My first degree was in French and English Language (Leeds, 1967) and I then went on to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (UNCW, 1970) with a special reference to teaching English as a Second Language (TESL).

Foreign languages were always my passion and after two years' teaching English in Benghazi under the auspices of the British Council, I took up a post in Germany to teach English and to fulfill my ambition to learn German, now my second foreign language. Altogether I spent seven years in Germany, teaching at one of the first and largest comprehensives in the Federal Republic of Germany (Gesamtschule, Kamen, NRW) and then at a local grammar school (Gymnasium, Bergkamen, NRW). The experiences I gained at these schools profoundly influenced my approach to education and were to stimulate the initiatives I introduced as a teacher in Britain.

In 1976 I returned temporarily to Britain to complete a Masters degree in General and Applied Linguistics at the University of Exeter (1978). My area of specialization was text linguistics and my dissertation topic was paraphrase as an investigative device to establish a set of formal characteristics for the recognition of different text types.

On completion of my Master's degree, I was appointed on a two-year contract to the University of Cologne, where I taught courses in translation, English grammar, phonetics and English Literature. 

I returned to Britain in 1980 to embark on a career at secondary level as a teacher of French and German. In 1982 I completed the final examinations of the then Institute of Linguists in German with distinctions in all papers.

While at Millfield School, Somerset,  I introduced continuous assessment within the French Department and developed a computer-based series of programmes to record and evaluate pupil performance. This endeavour was largely inspired by my positive experience in Germany, using continuous assessment as a diagnostic and predictive tool. Later,when I was Head of Modern Languages at Newlands Manor School in Seaford and through the use of the same approach, results in Modern Languages (French and German) improved over a six-year period from just under 70% to 100%.

I finally retired from secondary education in 2003, since when I have been actively involved in home tuition and especially 11+ preparation.

I have had an on-going and close connection since 1991 as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language with Suzanne Sparrow (Plymouth) Language School, teaching advanced courses to French students studying for their Baccalaureate in English and entrance to the "grandes ├ęcoles" - France's top engineering schools.

All three children are doing really well in their schools. Our son is now in gifted and talented for maths! and we often talk about how good the work you did with them made a great difference in their confidence.
